A programming language utilized by MS servers.
Back End
The side of a website a user doesn’t see. It’s the coding that the programmer or designer writes to make the site functional.
Blog : short for "web log"
A type of web site that is used by an individual for a daily journal or log and as a community or public forum.
Browser
Examples of browsers are Internet Explorer, FireFox, Safari, or Opera. Browsers are programs that translate and display webpages.
Cache
An area where your browser stores previously viewed websites on your computer.
Cookie
Information stored on a users computer but created by a website previously visited. A cookie usually contains usernames, dates and times so the site will quickly recognize the user when they come back.
Database
usually a server application that stores data in records. Databases are used for shopping carts, blogs, and search engines.
DNS : Domain Name Server
This is the server (computer) where your website files are hosted (stored). The company hosts your site may be the same as your Registrar (where you bought your domain name). DNS can read two ways. Example 1: www.yourwebsitename.com
*The DNS is actually where the website name is stored e.g. network solutions might store joppadesign.com and translate the IP in the name joppadesign.com
Flash Piece
This is small portion of a web site that uses Adobe Flash. Just the navigation could use Flash, or a movie clip or a side bar.
Flash Site
A site that was made using Adobe Flash. Flash uses a more complex language similar to javascript, which can create dynamic interactivity and a fluidly animated site.
Form
On a website, this is a page or smaller space with blank fields a user fills in and then usually clicks a ‘submit’ button. Most commonly used for gathering information that is then emailed to the website company.
Front End
The part of a website the users sees, consisting of graphics, photos, animations and text.
FTP : File Transfer Protocal
A way to send files from one computer to another via the internet.
GIF : Graphics Interchange Format
A compressed image format that is most commonly used for the web.
GIF Animation
A single image containing an animation
HTML : Hyper Text Mark-up Language
This is the programming language that is used to display information and graphics over the internet. All sites, even Flash sites, use HTML as their base.
IP : Internet Protocol
A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots, EX. 10.234.56.78.
ISP : Internet Service Provider
A company that sells Internet connections. EX. AOL, SuddenLink, NTS, ect.
JPG or JPEG : Joint Photographic Experts Group
A compressed image format and best for showing high quality images over the internet.
Navigation
The part of a webpage that has links to other pages within the site. Navigation usually contain the following buttons or links, 'Home, About Us, Contact'.
PDF : Portable Document Format
A compressed file that is usually downloaded and viewed using Adobe Acrobat.
PHP
A
widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML.
Populate
To insert content into a newly created web page ( to populate the page).
PSD : PhotoShop Document
Created using Adobe PhotoShop. Many websites are designed in Adobe PhotoShop before the are built into a webpage.
Registar
Any company that records and stores a domain name for a yearly fee. Many tend to provide hosting services as well.
Search Engine
Google and Yahoo are two of the most commonly used search engines. They are web based applications that the user types in what they are looking for, click 'search' and the application scans a database against your search criteria. It returns the most relevant list of sites to the user.
Secure Form
This is for sensitive data, phone numbers, SSN, or other private data that needs to be kept safe and secure. A secure form is encrypted as it is sent over the internet, so if anyone were to come across it no data could be read.
SEO : Search Engine Optimization
Optimizing a website to make it more easily searched by search engine bots. This can include the way the copy on the site is worded, they way the copy is displayed, and the way the site is built.
Site Outline
An outline of a web site that lays out where pages will be. A site outline helps developers and customers get on the same page about what the web site will actually contain.
SSL : Secure Sockets Layer
An open protocol that is the industry standard for protecting confidential data transmitted via the internet. You can tell if a web page or form is secure by looking in the address bar of your browser for an 's' at the end of 'http'. It will read 'https' otherwise, the information is not really secure.
SWF : ShockWave Flash
The file format of anything created using Flash.
URL : Uniform Resource Locator
The specific location of any web based document on the internet. You see this in your address bar across the top of most browsers. It usually will look like this: http://www.domainname.com.
XHTML : Extensible Hypertext Markup Language
A hybrid between HTML and XML. Used to meet more strict coding standards.
